Airsoft Patches: Choosing, Mounting, Placing

    5 min read

Patches personalize your gear, but picking one is not as simple as it looks. The most common mistakes are choosing the wrong velcro side or a size that does not fit the panel. This guide shows you how to choose and mount them correctly the first time.

    Embroidered vs PVC

Embroidered patches are stitched thread on a fabric backing. They look traditional, sit flat, and take colour well, but fine detail is limited by stitch size, and light colours pick up dirt over a season.

PVC patches are moulded rubber. They handle sharp detail and small text far better, wipe clean with a thumb, and shrug off rain, which is why they dominate on plate carriers used in winter games. They are slightly stiffer, so very large PVC designs can lift at the corners on curved panels.

Hook and loop: the mistake to avoid

Velcro has two sides. Gear panels are almost always loop (the soft field), so a patch needs hook (the scratchy side) on its back. If a patch arrives with a soft backing, it will not stick to your carrier, and you would need a hook adapter.

Sewn patches without velcro are still worth it for something permanent, like a club patch on a jacket; anything you might swap between kits should have a hook backing.

    Sizes that fit real gear

    • Around 5 × 5 cm: caps, sleeve panels, small pouch faces.
    • Around 8 × 5 cm: the classic rectangle for plate carrier front panels and chest rigs.
    • 10 cm and above: back panels and bags, where a big design reads at distance.

Measure the loop panel before ordering rather than the garment: a patch that overhangs the velcro field peels off on the first snag.

Placement that survives a game day

Keep the front panel for identification and the shoulder or back for personality, because anything on the front of a carrier sits under slings and magazine pouches and will be rubbed constantly. Press a new patch firmly for a few seconds along the whole surface; most "the velcro is weak" complaints come from a patch that was only pressed in the middle.

    Care

PVC: damp cloth, no solvents. Embroidered: remove the patch before machine washing the garment where possible, and air dry rather than tumble dry to avoid thread shrinkage. Store spare patches stuck to a loop panel or a spare velcro strip so the hook side stays free of lint.
